Office "Makeover"

My 9 year old has been using this child size roll-top desk for a few years. Hubby and I keep noticing how his legs get longer but the desk refuses to grow along with him! Hubby says, "he really needs a bigger desk." Yes, but we really are not fans of most current furniture (particle board stuff) and are also not fans of spending huge $ for furniture that we don't even like. Besides, boy has a unique personality (how about that Pez collection!) which should be reflected in his furnishings. So we put it in our minds but realized it would take some time.

Remember George Peppard's character Hannibal on The A Team? I feel like him because all I keep saying is, "I love it when a plan comes together." Enter one thrift store vintage file cabinet with drop-leaf desk section. Woo hoo. Boy loves it because it reminds him of the massive metal desk he wanted from another thrift store which was a) too expensive and b) way TOO BIG for his room. Magic price on this was $10 and somehow boy and I managed to maneuver this into the trunk of my four-door sedan. I did graze his knee with the corner but sometimes you've got to suffer for great end results!

Fits in the room perfectly. But what to do about a chair? Oh wait...and off I run to the garage where I have been storing a garbage rescue chair. Don't they look like they were meant for one another?

Every desk needs good light. Oh wait...let's use the nifty retro lamp we bought at Goodwill several weeks ago for $3.

The chair seat was less than pretty. Off to the fabric store where we spent $5 for an orange print (we are an orange household as we begin the Syracuse indoctrination process). Pulled some batting from my stash and hubby and son recovered the seat.

I love this manufacturer plate on the front of the drawers. Sturdy steel destined for many years of use.

Boy is happy with the look. Mom and Dad are happy that needs have been met, dollars have been kept reasonable, and we didn't have to make do with something we didn't like.

Burlington Antique Show

The booth looked pretty good. Set up with three other ladies and between us we should have had something for everyone! Love this floral print. The old shabby frame was nice
too. Hope the new owner loves it!

Sunday dawned crisp and bright and I was out the door at 5AM. I am so not a morning person but seeing as I was so excited I couldn't fall asleep, getting up was much easier than anticipated.A healthy line of dealers and early shoppers awaited me at the fairgrounds just before 6AM.

The weather was great and got better as the day went on. By noon I was able to take my coat off and make sure everyone could see my fabulous vintage fruit apron. The pockets were great for holding money.

All in all a successful event and I arrived home famished and tired with a bit of color on my face. Can't complain about that!

Heading out this weekend with some junque treasures to sell at the Burlington Antique Show.


Been busy collecting and creating over those long winter months. Time to let these fun finds see some outside sunshine and find a new place to live!

Love this little school chair - it's actually a Heywood Wakefield piece. We have a thing for globes and my son is more than a little peeved that I told him this one should go. We really do have too many of them and no more room on the shelf! "But MOM...."

There are lots of great vendors and it really is a pleasant show to wander. Enjoy!

Going Irish?

We like a bit of orange with our green on Saint Patrick's Day! That would be from my side of the family - the kids are pure green on their Dad's side. I saw this idea for treats several years ago in a magazine and have been adapting them for different holidays ever since. So simple...use cookie cutters to cut out shapes in pound cake. Frost and decorate. Today after school I let my 9 year old son cut out the shapes (will wonders never cease, he actually agreed to participate!) and then my daughter helped with the decorating. I wanted them to be all perfect and Martha Stewart but then I remembered, the point is for them to have fun!!! Off to boil the potatoes for dinner. Hope the day brings some green to all of you as well.

Easter's On The Way

Well goodness but Easter is less than a month away! It's been hard to get decorated with everything STILL out of sorts from the basement debacle. Fortunately I was able to unearth our sweet Easter wreath. It's full of wee chenille chicks, felt eggs, glitter rabbits and a sprinkling of glitter spray for all over sparkle. The flocked rabbits and eggs were in a bag of junque from the Thrift Store several years ago and I kept hanging on to them for no apparent reason. They really were just too cute to throw away. Last year I got the idea to make them part of this wreath transformation. I love the way it brightens things up for the holiday and puts one in the mind of Spring!

Happy Birthday

Been a bit sidetracked recently with work on the house and a rather important birthday for my youngest. She had a fabulous day filled with princesses and fairies. We followed it up by making the above treat bags for her preschool classmates. The pink shirt is a tradition begun when she was two. Usually the number is done in vintage buttons but I decided to branch out this year with fabric. Love those Deco roses. Junque in this photo consists of cherry napkins which I found in an outbuilding of the glassblowing studio where I used to work, a gumball (now M&M) dispenser from yard sale last summer, and an ironstone pedestal which I picked up at a church sale to give to a friend and then loved so much I couldn't let it go. She has a few choice words for me whenever she visits and sees it in my home instead of hers! Happy Birthday princess girl!
